How to Remove a Green Screen from a Photo (and Fix Green Spill)
A green screen only does half the job. The backdrop makes the subject easy to separate, but someone still has to cut the subject out, deal with the color the screen reflected onto them, and save a file that keeps its transparency. Deleting the flat green area is the easy part; the difference between a clean key and an obvious one lives at the edges. Green spill: why edges stay tinted and what despill does
Chroma spill is reflected light: the screen acts like a giant green softbox behind the subject, and everything facing it — shoulders, jawline, flyaway hair — picks up a green rim. Deleting the backdrop does not delete that rim, which is why careless keys look fringed on a white page. During cutout, those contaminated border pixels are treated separately: rather than erased (which eats hair detail) or left alone (which keeps the fringe), their color is pulled back toward the subject's own tones with the fine alpha detail intact. Wrinkles, shadows, and uneven lighting
Classic keyers sample one green value and remove everything within a tolerance range, so a wrinkled pop-up screen — where creases read darker and hot spots read lighter — means a constant fight with sliders. The approach here is different: the subject is located as a whole rather than matched against a color value, so folds, lighting falloff toward the corners, and the soft shadow a subject throws on the fabric normally have no effect on the result. Two situations still deserve a reshoot: green or near-green clothing, which can blend into the backdrop, and lighting so dim the subject's outline merges with a dark screen.
Green screen or blue screen?
Green dominates today for a practical reason: digital camera sensors devote half their photosites to green, so the green channel carries the least noise and keys the cleanest. Green also reflects more light, which means a smaller lighting budget. Blue earns its place when green works against you — blond or light-gray hair, a wardrobe with green in it, or a night composite where blue spill is less conspicuous. Both colors key equally well here, since the subject is detected directly; pick whichever backdrop suits the shoot, not the software.

Green-screen removal questions
Will a wrinkled or unevenly lit green screen still key cleanly?
Usually, yes. Creases and dimmer corners rarely affect the result, because the cutout does not depend on the backdrop being one uniform shade. What does cause trouble is a crease shadow deep enough to read as part of the subject's outline. Two free fixes: steam or stretch the worst folds, and move the subject about a meter forward so their shadow falls on the floor rather than the fabric — the distance also cuts green bounce.
Can I use a green-painted wall instead of a real green screen?
Yes — a wall painted a solid mid-to-bright green keys the same way fabric does, minus the wrinkles. Use a matte or eggshell finish; glossy paint throws specular highlights that read as pale patches in the backdrop. Paint marketed as chroma green is not required, though its saturation maximizes distance from skin tones. Keep the subject at least a meter off the wall — bounce spill grows quickly at close range.
Should I export a keyed still as PNG or JPG?
PNG, if the cutout will be layered over anything: JPG has no alpha channel, so saving as JPG flattens the transparency onto a solid color and undoes the keying. Keep PNG through every compositing step. JPG only makes sense as a final step, after a new background is already in place and a smaller file matters. WebP also preserves transparency at smaller sizes, but some older design tools still refuse WebP layers.
How do I get rid of leftover green tint after removing the screen?
Check the cutout against both a light and a dark background — a fringe that glows on one can be invisible on the other. If tint remains, zoom in and run the editor's brush along the affected edge to erase it. A one- or two-pixel fringe usually vanishes once the still sits on its real destination background, especially a mid-tone one. Tint along the whole outline means heavy spill at capture; reshoot with more distance from the screen.
