Remove Background from Image Without Losing Quality
Upload a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, or HEIC file and the cutout comes back at the resolution you started with, up to 8192 pixels per side. Your original, full-resolution image never leaves your device, nothing is stored, and the finished transparent PNG is put together right there in your browser. No account, no watermark, and no fee for the full-size download.
Removing the backdrop is usually not the last step, so the result opens in an editor instead of downloading straight away. If the automatic pass kept a strap it should have dropped — or erased an earring it should have kept — a manual brush lets you restore or remove any area by painting over it. From the same screen you can place a new backdrop behind the subject, compare the result against the original, and download the finished file once it looks right. Everything continues to run against the full-resolution image, so nothing you do in the editor costs quality. The page works the same way on a phone as on a desktop: same editor, same output size, no charge on any of it.
A note on formats: JPEG and PNG uploads cover most cases, but WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, and Apple's HEIC work as well. Output is a PNG with a true alpha channel, which is what design tools, print services, and marketplace uploaders expect a cutout to be. If a destination needs a flat file instead, add a backdrop before downloading and the transparency is filled with the color you chose rather than an arbitrary white.
Background removal questions, answered
Does removing the background from an image reduce its resolution?
No. The editor composites the cutout at your original dimensions — a 4032×3024 photo exports as a 4032×3024 PNG, up to the platform limit of 8192 pixels per side (older phones can run out of memory before that). One honest caveat: the subject keeps every pixel it arrived with, but the transparent edge is worked out at a coarser scale than the photo itself, so a tight crop around fine hair can look softer than the rest of the frame.
Can I remove the background from a photo taken on my phone?
Yes, including iPhone HEIC files, which most browsers cannot display natively. The uploader decodes HEIC and HEIF itself, so it works in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge as well as Safari — even on Windows, where the file picker normally greys .heic files out because the OS reports no file type for them. Live Photos save as HEIC too, so shots straight from an iPhone camera roll work without converting them first. JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, and BMP uploads work as well.
Is my image uploaded to a server, or does everything happen in my browser?
Partly: a small working copy is sent to compute the cutout, and your full-resolution original never leaves your device. Your browser then applies the returned mask to the original pixels locally to build the finished PNG. If our service is unreachable or blocked by a strict ad blocker, a lighter fallback runs on your own device instead, so the page keeps working. That split is also why a connection gets the best-quality pass while the fallback needs none. Nothing is kept on our side either: the working copy exists only long enough to return the cutout, and is discarded immediately afterwards. If you would rather nothing left your device at all, the private mode at /private-background-remover/ processes everything locally instead.
Can I add a new background after the old one is removed?
Yes — the same editor that removes the background can put a new one behind the cutout: a solid color, a gradient, a pattern, or a photo you upload yourself. Nothing is re-processed when you swap backdrops, so trying five looks costs nothing in quality. Downloads keep their transparency when you skip the backdrop step, so one cutout can serve both a white-background listing and a branded banner. If you already know what you want behind the subject, start from the add background tool, which opens the editor with the backdrop step ready.
