The two parts you still need to verify are head position (the chin-to-crown measurement must be 1 to 1.375 inches, which means roughly 50% of the 2-inch frame height) and pose (face square to camera, neutral expression, eyes open, no glasses since 2016). The State Department publishes a free photo tool at travel.state.gov that scores the file against every rule before you upload — run the JPEG through it after cropping to confirm before you submit the application.
Why 600×600 pixels and not the exact country dimensions?
600×600 is 2 inches at 300 DPI — the US baseline. The UK, Schengen, India, and most other countries use 35×45 mm at 300 DPI which is 413×531 pixels. Outputting the larger 600×600 square gives you headroom to crop down to any of the smaller specs without losing quality, whereas starting at 413×531 would force you to up-scale for the US case and that introduces blur in the print. The padding-then-crop approach is the universally-safe order of operations across passport-photo and visa workflows worldwide.
Can I use this for a Schengen visa or for India's Passport Seva?
Yes for the background-cleanup half of the workflow. Schengen consulates and India's Passport Seva both require a clean white or light-grey background, which this tool delivers. India's Passport Seva requires either a digital upload during the appointment booking or a physical print taken to the appointment. Schengen consulates almost universally require physical prints handed in at the appointment. Why do some passport portals auto-reject edited photos?
Because intake systems increasingly run ICAO-style portrait-quality screening before a human ever opens the file. Those checks measure lighting uniformity, edge sharpness around the hairline, backdrop evenness, and compression artifacts — and an aggressively cut-out subject pasted onto a synthetic backdrop can fail the edge-consistency test even when it looks clean to a person. Several governments have removed user-supplied photos from the pipeline entirely: Germany accepts only digitally captured biometric photos since 1 May 2025, and the Philippines DFA and India's in-country Passport Seva Kendras photograph applicants at the counter, so there is nothing to upload at all.
