Two-layer output — sharp subject on top, blurred backdrop underneath
The subject is cut out first, then the blur is applied only to the backdrop behind it — never to the subject itself. The subject stays at full sharpness while the backdrop dissolves. Keeping the two on separate layers is what lets you swap the backdrop later without redoing the cutout.
Three named blur radius presets — 8 px, 24 px, 48 px
Generic sliders force you to guess. The named presets pin the Gaussian sigma so you get repeatable results across photos in the same set: 8 px (subtle separation, reads like Zoom Standard background blur), 24 px (medium dissolve, reads like Microsoft Teams Together Mode blur), 48 px (heavy dissolve, the look most photographers use for hero images and gallery wall prints).

Pixel-Gaussian blur is mathematically symmetric — it averages neighbouring pixels in a circular kernel. Optical lens blur is not symmetric; it produces hexagonal or octagonal bokeh discs around bright highlights because real-world lens apertures have 6 or 8 blade openings. Toggle the lens-blur option and the blurred-layer pass swaps the Gaussian kernel for a hexagonal disc kernel that mimics the optical look for highlight points in the original backdrop.
How to blur a background after cutting the subject out
Drop the source photo into the editor
Phone shot, studio file, or stock image. The first thing the editor does is run the cutout pass — the same pass behind /background-remover/ — so the subject layer and the backdrop layer end up as separate planes inside the editor canvas.
Pick a blur radius and confirm the preview
Choose 8 px (subtle), 24 px (medium), or 48 px (heavy), or drag the manual slider for any value in between. The preview updates live. The subject stays at full sharpness on its own layer; only the backdrop layer receives the blur kernel. If the cutout left any edge halo, the brush tool fixes it before the blur is baked in.
Export the flattened JPEG or keep the layered file
Two export choices. JPEG flattens the layers into a single image — the right pick for messages, blog posts, social uploads, and anywhere transparency does not matter. Lens-blur emulation for photographers without a fast prime
Fast prime lenses (50 mm f/1.4, 85 mm f/1.8, 135 mm f/2) cost between $400 and $2,000 and exist mainly to produce shallow optical depth of field. How the cut-then-blur workflow actually works under the hood
Every background blur you have seen — the Zoom video-call blur, the Microsoft Teams blur, the Google Meet blur, iPhone and Pixel Portrait Mode — follows the same two-step order, and it is the order retouchers work in by hand in Photoshop, Lightroom, and Affinity Photo. Step one separates the subject from everything behind them. Step two softens only the backdrop and leaves the subject exactly as sharp as it was. If you blur the whole photo first and try to bring the subject back afterwards, the edges get chewed up and the result reads as obviously fake. That order is the difference between a photo that looks like it came off a real portrait lens and one that looks like a smeared screenshot.
