Pixel-Gaussian blur is mathematically symmetric — it averages neighbouring pixels in a circular kernel. Optical lens blur is not symmetric; it produces hexagonal or octagonal bokeh discs around bright highlights because real-world lens apertures have 6 or 8 blade openings. Toggle the lens-blur option and the blurred-layer pass swaps the Gaussian kernel for a hexagonal disc kernel that mimics the optical look for highlight points in the original backdrop.

How the cut-then-blur workflow actually works under the hood

Every background blur you have seen — the Zoom video-call blur, the Microsoft Teams blur, the Google Meet blur, iPhone and Pixel Portrait Mode — follows the same two-step order, and it is the order retouchers work in by hand in Photoshop, Lightroom, and Affinity Photo. Step one separates the subject from everything behind them. Step two softens only the backdrop and leaves the subject exactly as sharp as it was. If you blur the whole photo first and try to bring the subject back afterwards, the edges get chewed up and the result reads as obviously fake. Will this give me the same look as the Zoom or Microsoft Teams background-blur on my video calls?
Yes for stills, with one caveat. The 8 px named-radius preset reproduces the Zoom Standard background-blur intensity almost exactly, and the 24 px preset reproduces the Microsoft Teams Together Mode and Google Meet equivalents. The caveat is that Zoom, Teams, and Meet do real-time per-frame segmentation on a live video stream, so their cutout edges sometimes wobble around hair or shoulders — you have probably seen the artifacting yourself. The cutout pass here runs once on a still image with no time pressure, so the subject mask is sharper and the result is closer to the per-frame ideal those video-call services target. If you want the still to look like a perfect frame from a polished call, this is the closer match; if you want to actually run the blur on a live stream, the call services themselves remain the right tool.
What does each of the three named blur radii actually look like, and when should I pick which?
Concrete pixel-by-pixel description. The 8 px Gaussian sigma blurs each backdrop pixel with the weighted average of pixels within roughly a 25-pixel diameter — the backdrop scene remains recognisable but soft, doors are still doors, plants are still plants, just out of focus. The 24 px sigma extends the averaging diameter to about 75 pixels — the backdrop loses recognisable detail and reads as a colour wash with broad shapes, walls become gradient bands, plants become green smears. The PNG file is roughly 4 to 8 times the size of the equivalent JPEG — a 2 MB JPEG becomes a 12 MB PNG — so do not pick PNG by default; pick it only when you know you want the layer separation for downstream compositing.
If I already have a PNG cutout from /background-remover/ or /transparent-background/, can I use that as the input here instead of starting from scratch?
Yes, and it is the recommended path when you have already done the cutout and just want to add the blurred backdrop.
